Wiffen

David Wiffen is a mainstay on the local music scene.  He’s toured with the Tommy Dorsey Big Band, and the Peter Appleyard Orchestra and has shared the stage with Aretha Franklin and Nathalie Cole. David can play any style – jazz, rock, blues, and classical music and his muscular, soulful sound makes him the “go to” tenor man in the region. Dave holds a Masters Degree in jazz performance from the Eastman School of Music and an Honours Bachelor of Music in performance from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Come early – join Dave and the Live At The Jazz Room team at 7:30 PM, before the show, for the release of Dave Wiffen Quintet Live At The Jazz Room, a brand new album recorded entirely at the Jazz Room.  Proceeds from the sale of this fantastic recording go back into producing other live albums from local heroes and up-and-coming artists – please come and join us for this very special event, immediately preceding the show!
Shortly after graduating from Eastman, Dave spent a year touring the U.S. and Japan with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Since then he has performed in a wide variety of musical styles with many different ensembles including Orchestra London, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Glenn Buhr’s Ebony Tower Ensemble, the Peter Appleyard Jazz Orchestra, Manteca and The Spitfire Band.

Dave has played in a number of pit orchestras including several seasons at the Stratford Festival, the Grand Theatre In London, the Jubilee Theatre in Summerside PEI and the Toronto productions of The Producers and The Full Monty. Recently, he has been touring across Canada and the United States with The Piano Men, a show featuring the music of Elton John and Billy Joel, starring Jim Witter.

He is a founding member of the New Berlin Chamber Ensemble, comprised of four musicians who all play clarinet, flute and saxophone in both classical and jazz styles. They’ve recently toured Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan and appeared on TVO’s Studio 2.

He appears on recordings with two-time Juno nominee Freeflight the Big Band (Sony), The New Berlin Chamber Ensemble (as performer, arranger, and producer) and W.C. Handy award winner Mel Brown and The Homewreckers(Electro-Fi), among many others.

Dave has been the saxophone instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University since 2000 and held the same position at the University of Western Ontario for six years
