Michael-Dunston

“Michael is someone who channels the whole history of male R&B vocals when he sings” – Andrew Scott, Toronto Jazz Festival

“Michael Dunston’s respect and admiration for Donny Hathaway is immeasurable and his affinity for the material is obvious…We were immediately hooked by the great vocals and Dave Young’s unbelievably funky electric bass. Dave Young is just as good in this setting as he is playing the acoustic bass with Oscar Peterson or playing the music of Charles Mingus with his own quintet. Michael Dunston has a smooth unfaltering voice very much like Donny Hathaway’s. Occasionally…he sounds like Stevie Wonder. Michael Dunston expertly sets up his songs, creating the mood with a voice that transitions cleanly into song.”   –  The Live Music Report

The Dave Young/Micheal Dunston band makes a return visit to the Jazz Room. If you love R and B and Soul and you missed the band last year, you don’t want to make the same mistake again.  This R and B show features the soulful voice of Michael Dunston backed by an all star band lead by Dave Young on Bass. Michael is a a veteran of the club scene, a man who also recorded for the legendary soul label Atlantic Records, played Bo Diddley in the film Mr. Rock n’ Roll: The Allan Freed Story and who grew up singing in the churches of North Carolina. Michael will be backed by the Dave Young Sextet, stretching out with R and B grooves.
