Derek Hines’ book of vocals is quite diverse. The themes focus on traditional standards from Evans to Monk. The sub-plots are a jazz take on legends from Lennon/McCartney to Jimmy Webb.
Derek will be joined by an all-star quintet with Richard Whiteman on piano, Landon Viiera on saxophone, Jonny Chapman on bass and Davide Corazza on drums. The quintet will interpret two classic recordings cover to cover. The first set will feature the Bill Evans and Tony Bennett album, and the second set will feature the epic John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman session. The final set will let loose the perennial favorites of the band.
Derek is known across the region as a creative and thoughtful interpreter of jazz ballads. This touching rendition of In the wee small hours surfaces candid lines that feature Hines and Chapman. A gently swinging lyrical groove that has the feel of a duet between baritone and double bass.
Highlights of his career include performances with Freddy Cole, and 70’s television great John Davidson. This path also led to a five year run with Carnival Cruise Lines where he cut his teeth nightly with some of the world’s finest musicians.
