Workshop Description

Matt Brubeck (cello) will be presenting a workshop for string players who are interested in exploring jazz and improvisation on their instruments (violin, viola, and cello). Topics and playing exercises will include modes of listening, variation of musical materials, and how to develop a practice of improvisation. Classical players who are curious about where to begin, or players who are already experimenting and would like to learn more are welcome. Everyone should bring their instrument/music stand and plan to participate.

$5 at the door. Participants are welcome to bring their instrument.

Matt Brubeck is a JUNO award-winning performer/composer specializing in improvisation on the cello. Raised on jazz and classically trained at Yale, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and has taken his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories (including Tom Waits, Natalie McMaster, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.) In recent years, Matt has become a central figure on the Canadian music scene. In addition to Brubeck Braid, his ongoing projects include the highly eclectic Stretch Orchestra (with guitarist Kevin Breit and percussionist Jesse Stewart), and the critically acclaimed improv ensemble, Ugly Beauties (a collaboration with pianist Marilyn Lerner and drummer Nick Fraser). In his solo work, Matt Brubeck explores the reach of contemporary cello performance, placing various musical traditions in dialogue with each other to reveal a broad continuum of influences. Matt is on the music faculty at York University and Humber College, where he teaches strings, improvisation, composition, and leads various ensembles. Yes, he is the tallest son of Dave.
