Greg Runions and Dave Barton

Greg Runions (vibraphone) and Dave Barton (guitar) will talk about their respective approach to creating music using a couple examples from the pieces they will perform at their gig.

From Greg:

“After creating a fair amount of music for large and small ensembles I’ve started to understand my own writing process a bit.  I usually create music that has a limited amount of source material.  I tend to think of these as structural building blocks or cells. The 2 tunes of mine that we will look at use this concept extensively.”

From Dave:

“I often compose music away from any instrument, on blank manuscript. Less often I write from a chord progression or melody fragment that I improvise on guitar or piano. I write quickly, and let the piece age for a couple of days, then edit later. The amount of editing required is never predictable!  ”

To end the workshop Greg and Dave will speak to some of the unique challenges presented by playing this music on their respective instruments, vibraphone and guitar.

This Saturday afternoon workshop will include a lecture/demo component geared to complement the evening show.  In addition to the insights and examples of technique, participants have an opportunity to play along with the visiting professionals leading the workshops! The grand finale is a raffle for a one-hour Skype lesson with the leader of the workshop valued at $100!
