Peripheral Vision is a Toronto-based jazz quartet that brings a deep respect for the jazz tradition into conversation with modern compositional ideas and improvisational freedom. Co-led by guitarist Don Scott and bassist Michael Herring, the group has been performing together for over 15 years, developing a strong musical rapport rooted in swing, interplay, and spontaneous creativity.
The quartet’s sound is grounded in the language of classic jazz, while also exploring extended forms, modern textures, and collective improvisation. Drawing inspiration from their favourite artists of the 1960s, Peripheral Vision values the spirit of dialogue and democratic music-making. Their repertoire, composed by Scott and Herring, is brought to life by the deeply responsive playing of saxophonist Trevor Hogg and drummer Nick Fraser, both respected voices on the Canadian jazz scene.
The band has released six albums (including two live recordings), earned a JUNO nomination, and received the Galaxie Rising Star Award from the Montreal Jazz Festival. Their current project, We’ve Got Nothing, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, features a new CD and live video series.
Peripheral Vision offers a modern jazz experience that remains firmly connected to the genre’s rich lineage—imaginative, expressive, and deeply musical.
