THE DOUG WICKEN QUINTET celebrates Doug’s 80th birthday and 60-plus years of performing jazz. He arrived on the K-W jazz scene in 1963 as a young bassist studying under Dave Drew, followed by 1965-66 summer workshops with maestro Ron Carter. He served as the bassist with The Barry Wills Trio for 20 years. In 2004, he began studying the flute. He returned to K-W in 2015 after retiring from a teaching career in eastern Ontario. Previous Jazz Room appearances have included gigs with the late Andy Klaehn’s Quintet as a double bassist, and with The Bernie Carroll Project as both bassist and flutist. The current quintet will feature a blend of jazz standards and Doug’s original compositions, and he will pay homage to the many fine local musicians he has worked with during his career.
