A sought-after bass player and composer, Olivier Babaz multiplies artistic projects and collaborations. He accompanies numerous artists and takes part in various bands. Born and raised in Paris, he lived and built his musical path mainly in France, the Netherlands and on Reunion Island. He established himself in Montreal in 2010. After “La Lune de Kala”, Akoz Duo’s disc, “Midnight Cafeine” , “Virages” and “Odd Light”, Olivier presents his fifth album as a leader, ”Fragments”, which features compositions that meander between modern jazz and acoustic rock, incorporating surprising elements of Reunion Island rhythms and contemporary music. Babaz has been developing an intriguing interplay of Kalimba and acoustic bass, opening a panoply polyrythmic possibilities and exploring the unique texture created by these two instruments. He is one of the official tutors and instructors at discoverdoublebass.com and holds masterclasses and clinics. In 2019, he officially launched “Midnight Cafeine Music” in order to coordinate creative projects in Montreal, Paris and on Reunion Island.
