Liner notes for Autumn Glow: “I have always been attracted to chamber music in the classical world. As a committed jazz player and composer, my musical performances have long featured a lot of improvised content. That said, throughout my life I have continued to explore the amazing piano repertoire in the classical canon, as well as chamber and symphonic music.

I believe that there are a lot of similarities between a string quartet (or other small chamber music ensemble) and small group jazz playing. Although classical chamber music is not improvised, there is still an individualism in each player that combines into a symbiotic whole. There is also lots of room for interpretation, despite how often a piece has been performed and recorded. The intense listening and reacting to other players is another common element”.

Brian Dickinson has been a fixture on the Canadian jazz scene for over thirty-five years. He has performed internationally with artists including Lee Konitz, Jerry Bergonzi,  Michael and Randy Brecker, Pat LaBarbera, Kirk MacDonald, Kenny Wheeler and John Abercrombie. He is a multiple Juno award winner. As a sideman, he has played on over eighty recordings. For the past two years, he has been an active member of the “Canadian Jazz Collective” touring and recording in Europe and North America.

The Penderecki String Quartet, approaching the third decade of an extraordinary career, has become one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of their generation. These  4 musicians, from Poland, Canada, and the USA bring their varied yet collective experience to create performances that demonstrate their “remarkable range of technical excellence and emotional sweep” (Toronto, Globe and Mail). Their recent schedule has included concerts in New York (Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Los Angeles (REDCAT at Disney Hall), St. Petersburg, Paris, Prague, Berlin, Rome, Belgrade, Zagreb, Atlanta, as well as appearances at international festivals in Poland, Lithuania, Italy, Venezuela, Brazil, and China. They enter their 20th year as Quartet-in-Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University .

The concert will feature the  multiple Juno award winning saxophonist Kelly Jefferson and multiple Juno award winning bassist Mike Downes.
