Refracting folk music’s wildest traditions into a joyful shout, Jaron Freeman-Fox & the Opposite of Everything compact a decade of touring, into a rare Ontario appearance, promising their music will sound just as out-of-place in Waterloo as it has at traditional music festivals across Eastern Europe, the mountains of Scandinavia, and the Siberian steppe.

Bred in the mountains of Canada’s northwest, and steeped in study under the great traditional musicians of India, Scandinavia, and Siberia, Jaron Freeman-Fox redefines what his instrument is capable of, and gives the listener no choice but to take his unique refraction of world music on it’s own terms.   Jaron’s singular style was fostered from an early age as an apprentice of Canada’s renowned fiddle pioneer, the late Oliver Shroer who’s violin Jaron still plays.   Combining these seemingly disparate influences, Jaron’s band Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything, have toured extensively  since 2011, in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, including the Woodford Folk Festiva(Australia), the Shanghai World Music Festival, the Stockholm Jazz Festival, Kaustinen Folk Festival (Finland), Lotusfest (USA), Glatt&Verkehrt (Austria), the Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada), Xöömei in the Centre of Asia (Russia), Művészetek Völgye (Hungary) and WOMEX (Greece).  The band’s self-titled album garnered 3 Canadian folk Music Awards, the instrumental category for the Independent Music Awards and the International Songwriting Contest.

Band is:
Jaron Freeman-Fox – violin / viol d’amore
Alan Mackie – upright bass
Luan Phung – guitar
Steve Foster – drums
