The Karl Silveira Quintet is a contemporary jazz ensemble that features the original music of Karl Silveira. The music is influenced by many of his musical heroes including Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano, Mark Turner and Wayne Shorter. Karl is also inspired by contemporary visual art and aims to create an introspective experience for the audience that is similar to viewing a painting. The band recently released their debut album “A Porta Aperta” in March 2022. The album has performed well in Canadian radio ranking #2 for the month of April 2022 according to Earshot and has been reviewed very well by critics.
“The depth and range of trombonist/composer/educator Karl Silveira’s musical upbringing and experiences come to the fore in his magnificent self-released self-produced all-original A Porta Aperta debut.” -Mike Greenblatt (Goldmine)
“… he has come up with a beautiful and distinctive group sound… The curse of many debut recordings— wavering focus and lack of continuity of mood and sound—are avoided via Silveira always engaging and unorthodox compositional style and his superb arrangements… a polished, remarkable, superbly-played jazz sound coming out of Toronto.” Dan McClenaghan (All About Jazz)
The Karl Silveira Quintet has since become increasingly active in Toronto holding a residency at the Rex in July 2022 and playing regularly at Drom Taberna and the Jazz Bistro. The KSQ will also be expanding its reach later this year performing at the Jazz Room in Waterloo and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
