MELODY, LINES AND THE IMPROVISING GUITARIST

Ted Quinlan is widely known as one of Canada’s most multi-faceted jazz musicians, highly skilled as a solo jazz guitarist, session player, writer, and a dedicated educator. Ted’s leadership of the guitar department at Humber College’s Music Program in Toronto has been a cornerstone of a widely regarded music program.

Ted discusses topics that will be of interest to all improvisers with an emphasis on some of the gifts and challenges that the guitar presents. A variety of improvisational techniques will be explored. These will include finding new ways of generating melodic material and learning how to optimize the vocabulary we already possess. The following charts of Ted’s compositions will be examined from the dual perspectives of composition and improvisation and the relationship between them.

This Saturday afternoon workshop will include a lecture/demo component geared to complement the evening show.  In addition to the insights and examples of technique, participants have an opportunity to play along with the visiting professionals leading the workshops! The grand finale is a raffle for a one-hour Skype lesson with the leader of the workshop valued at $100!
