Saturday, April 7 – Kim Ratcliffe Quartet

Kim Ratcliffe was in demand, playing six nights a week in Victoria B.C., even as as teen.  Now based in Toronto, his jazz guitar leads a meeting of the minds in the Kim Ratcliffe quartet – Rat4.

  • Kim Ratcliffe – Guitar
  • Pat Collins – Bass
  • Jim Lewis – Trumpet and Flugelhorn
  • Ted Warren – Drums

This kind of talent can deliver on a wide ranging show with jazz standards, pop, free music, and contemporary featuring  compositions by all members of the quartet.  Here’s a taste of Kim’s lead in the artful I Got Extra Rhythm.

Kim Ratcliffe

Kim has played a part in the Frank Lozano Quintet along with Craig Taborn.  He played in Bruce Cassidy’s Hotfoot Orchestra, Paul Delong’s fusion band, and with groups led by Pat Collins, Andrew Downing, Jean Martin and Ted Warren. Kim’s toured with singer Holly Cole, Carlos Del Junco, and performed with Colm Wilkinson, David Clayton Thomas, Ron Sexmith and many others.

He was a member of the new music ensemble Hemispheres and his compositions can be heard on albums by The Heillig Manoeuvre, and others. Kim worked with many of the city’s top dance bands for many years, and his theatre experience includes Chicago, Hairspray and others. He has a B.F.A. from York University and is honoured to be on the guitar faculty at Humber and Mohawk colleges.

While the guitar keeps him well occupied, Kim has been known to play mandolin, 4 and 5 string banjos, resonator/ slide guitar, lap steel, ukelele and electric bass on gigs from time to time.
