Saturday, Jan 26 – Spike Wilner

Joining us by special invitation, pianist Spike Wilner is one of the brightest lights in the New York City jazz scene.  With Spike in high demand in NYC, we’re very pleased to be able to bring him to Waterloo Region for his first ever Canadian date.  To hear why Spike has earned such a reputation for jazz excellence, click HERE !

Hailing from a long line of artists and spiritual mystics, Spike’s sense of artistic purpose and transformative voice give his playing a particular meaning. His extensive performance and recording career attest to a wide-ranging list of collaborators among NYC’s greats, make him one of the most in-demand interpreters of piano jazz steeped in the deep roots of tradition. Wilner is also co-proprietor of the world-renowned jazz club Smalls, arguably New York’s most important hub for continuing an artist-supportive jazz environment.

With numerous ensemble options to choose from, Spike opted for the spare and intimate piano-guitar-bass combination, including Yotam Silberstein (guitar) and Paul Gill (bass). Gill is a veteran of the scene, performing with the likes of Stanley Turrentine and Eddie
Henderson. He has been a steady band member with Diana Krall, and currently tours with Elvis Costello. Immigrating from Israel seven years ago, award-winning Silberstein quickly established himself as one of the first-call guitarists on the scene, engaging in his
own recording projects, but also appearing with such artists as Dee Dee Bridgewater and Al Jarreau. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear three of the most dynamic musicians on the scene in a special-invitation performance right here in Waterloo.
