A fusion of Hindustani classical form with a world beat, Justin Gray‘s First Offering draws from a musical depth of many generations with sensitivity, understanding and devotion. Witness Justin’s alap on Bhairavi, introducing the raga and developing its form through improvisation and pitch modulation on the custom bass veena.

On the other side of the coin, Justin has turned heads as a funk bassist with a command of meter and a sense of line like that of Reid Anderson of the Bad Plus:

“Without a doubt one of the most exciting young bass players in this city, he never fails to impress me.” – Toronto Jazz Magazine

The first set will feature Synthesis, a suite written for Bass Veena by Justin Gray. The two following sets will include a combination of traditional Hinustani music and original compositions by the Canadian Indo-Jazz ensemble, Monsoon (co-led by Jonathan and Andrew Kay).

  • Ted Quinlan: Guitar
  • Ed Hanley : Tabla
  • Todd Pentney: Keyboards
  • Adam Teixeira: Percussion
  • Derek Gray: Percussion

Justin Gray - Bass Veena

The Bass Veena is an instrument designed by Justin, and built and co-created by Canadian Luthier Les Godfrey. It is an adaptation of the fretless bass into a form more suitable for Indo-Jazz.
